Term 2, Week 9

In Brief:

  • School Reports will be posted tomorrow on the Community Portal;
  • School holidays: Monday 8 July to Monday 22 July, school resumes on Tuesday 23 July at the normal time, Monday 22 July is a Teacher Only day;
  • Calendar (Term Fixtures) in StACNet;
  • The Preparatory School Music Concert was held on Wednesday night in the Centennial Chapel. The concert was a celebration of music. Please refer to the full article further on in the newsletter;
  • Lost Property – please check the items in the foyer.

End of Term 2

I wish the children and staff the very best for the two-week holiday break. Term 2 is often the most difficult due to the cold, wet, and short days. There has also been significant sickness. We can look forward to the start of Term 3 and the prospect of more sunlight and warmth.

Concerning

I had a member of the public ring me on Monday afternoon, just before 4.00pm, to inform me one of our younger students was in St Andrew’s Square (near Elmwood Park) in the pouring rain presumably waiting to be picked up. I drove there to check, but the child was no longer there. It is not a good idea for our children to wait for collection in obscure places, especially when we have Afterschool Care operating daily until 5.20pm.

StAC-Up Winning House

The StAC-Up Winning House for the end of Term 2 is Erwin. The children in Erwin House can come to school in casual wear tomorrow with a little or lot of red.

Miss Annabelle Kerr – Preparatory School Year 7 Teacher

Annabelle has resigned from her position and will finish on Friday 2 August. She started at the College at the beginning of the 2022 school year. Annabelle has been exceptional in all areas of her teaching at the school. She is also a highly regarded netball coach. Annabelle plans to head overseas for a travelling experience. Her friendly and kind demeanour, and all-round competence will be missed.

On behalf of our school community, I thank Annabelle for her time at the College and I wish her the best for her travels.

Parent Interviews: Monday 29 July – Thursday 1 August

The interviews next term will be in-person and spread over four days. Please note, all Years 4–8 children are required to attend the interviews.

If there is no suitable time available for you, please contact your child’s class teacher directly (via email) and another day and time will be arranged.

School code: yeatp

At this interview, your child’s mid-year report and results will be discussed.

World Vision 40-Hour Famine

As a College, we are supporting World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine (20 hours for primary-aged children). You will be able to support your child’s involvement and challenge by contributing financially – small amounts, gifted by many, will achieve a significant result! The children can participate any time now until the end of the upcoming school holidays.

World Vision is a global Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice.

No need to sign up individually; to access the St Andrew’s College World Vision site to donate please click here

Preparatory School Production | The Aurora Stone

It was great to see the Preparatory School production back on the calendar last week, after a hiatus since 2017. The original script and score, written by our talented Year 8 students and Year 13 music students, brought The Aurora Stone to life. Over 200 students from Years 7–8 took the stage, each playing a unique role. A big round of applause to the dedicated students, the Year 7–8 class teachers, and the production team. Director Ginnie Thorner and Musical Director Duncan Ferguson, along with all backstage and technical assistants (including many parents), made this production truly magical. It was wonderful to witness a second group shine on stage in the Gough Family Theatre.

Music Concert

On Tuesday evening, the Preparatory School presented a concert of music items in the Centennial Chapel. The concert featured the Junior Choir (Years 3–5), Cantare Choir (Years 6–8), Preparatory School Orchestra, chamber group trio, and solo items by the Year 8 music scholars Ethan Waines and Tony Chen. The evening showed a range of talent from children performing in large groups to very experienced musicians playing in small instrumental ensembles. This was a great performance opportunity for the children and the first opportunity for parents to hear the Junior Choir, the chamber group and instrumental soloists. The performers supported each other with enthusiastic applause and the concert was very well received by a supportive audience of parents and families.

Class 4T Submits New Words To Oxford English Dictionary

Class 4T, led by teacher Emily-Jane Ullrich, recently came up with a collection of 21 new words inspired by Roald Dahl’s novel, The BFG. Excited by the prospect of contributing to the English language, they wrote to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) team, who graciously welcomed their submissions for the next OED edition, emphasising the importance of children’s language creativity. Whether these words find their way into the dictionary remains uncertain, but the envelope with 4T’s submissions is now en route to the OED headquarters in Oxford.

Science Badge

Over the past two terms, Year 7–10 students have been joining Secondary school teacher Rebecca Richardson each Tuesday lunchtime to complete Science Badge activities. Students have been working on a variety of badges so far this year, ranging from Marine Biology to Food Technology and Epidemiology. The purpose of Science Badges is to get students interested in and working on a series of science activities. Students choose a badge (there are over 30 available) and are provided with an activity sheet for that badge. Students need to complete 20 points from the activity sheet and then hand in their work for marking. When completed, students receive a certificate and a badge to wear on their blazer, which is presented in assembly.

Special awards are presented to students when they complete the required number of badges. Louis Hyland (Year 8) recently completed his fifteenth Science Badge and was awarded with his Gold Star Badge. A badge, certificate and congratulatory letter were presented to Louis at the End-of-Term Preparatory School Assembly, and he also has his photo on the Science Award Trust Honours Board. Congratulations Louis for your continued hard work and motivation when completing science badge activities. You are a wonderful role model to so many students.

If you have children in Years 7–10 and would like more information about Science Badges, or how to join the club, please contact Rebecca Richardson (RRI@stac.school.nz) or visit www.sciencebadges.co.nz.
