Dear Parents and Caregivers

Today we are enjoying perfect conditions here at Lake Karapiro for the first finals day of the Maadi Cup Rowing Regatta. I was fortunate to arrive just in time to see the Girls’ U15 Quad win their A final and the gold medal! A little later, the Boys’ U17 8+ rowed an amazing race to win the silver medal, a close second to Hamilton Boys’ High School. So exciting! The crews have made nine A finals and eight B finals, so are set for a great couple of days.

Gold medal Maadi Cup winners in 2017, Zack Rumble and Thomas Russel (both OC 2017), spoke to and supported our crews today.

Other amazing achievement from Summer Tournament Week include the Senior Girls' A team finishing fourth in New Zealand, the Mixed tennis team also finishing fourth in the country and, as I write, two gold medals at the South Island MTB championships – awesome results!

The 16 teams around the country have represented St Andrew’s College superbly (see newsletter for a summary of results to date). Thank you to all parents who have supported our teams this week and to the staff, coaches and managers.

Last weekend our Mixed touch team played in the South Island Secondary School’s tournament at Sheldon Park, Christchurch. The team played a fast and skillful game to win the final against a slick Rolleston College team. St Andrew’s last won the South Island title back in 2010. Congratulations to the team, coach Paul Harris and manager Alison Lomax.

On Monday, the golf team came first at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Golf Championships and have now qualified for nationals later this year (see newsletter for details).

Congratulations also to the Cultural Captains Marco Leighs and Mia Walker (both Year 13) and the students involved in the Cultural Showcase on Wednesday evening (see newsletter for details).

Finally, congratulations to the Heads of Community Service Guy Daniels and Jessie Logie (both Year 13) for their fantastic efforts in supporting ‘So they Can’ with the One Human Race (see my contribution below!).

I look forward to reporting the final results of tournament week next week.

‘SO THEY CAN’ FUNDRAISER

This month I have decided to support the One Human Race campaign for ‘So They Can’. St Andrew’s College adopted this charity three years ago after I met one of the co-founders, Cassandra Treadwell, from Wānaka. The commitment to building schools in Kenya and Tanzania and training Teachers to educate the children is dear to my heart and the success of this organisation has had such a positive impact on thousands of children who live in circumstances it is hard for us to imagine. St Andrew’s College is an official partner of ‘So They Can’ and I commend our Community Service Leaders for their active support of this charity in their quest to make a significant donation from our school.

My goal was to walk 200km as part of the One Human Race during the month of March. I am pleased to report I have now surpassed the 200km goal, mostly walked on the treadmill at StACFit early each morning, with some weekend walks in the Port Hills or Hagley Park.

If you would like to support my walk, you can donate by clicking here.

Your donation will support our collective fundraising effort for St Andrew’s.

‘We give So They Can’ – Thank you.

Around the College

SUMMER TOURNAMENT WEEK ROUNDUP

This year we have had 16 teams representing St Andrew’s College in 10 different sports, competing in Auckland and all the way down to Invercargill.

New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Maadi Cup – We have had a great week of rowing up at Lake Karapiro, with our squad performing well on the water. Today’s racing has bought some success for a number of our squad, with two national medals being won by our crews on the first day of finals. Our Girls’ U15 Coxed Quad of Abbie Hartstonge, Sophia Voice, Sophia Drury, Mollie Thomas (all Year 11) and Zakiya Smith (Year 12 – cox) won gold by 0.32 seconds. Our Boys’ U17 8+ of Cameron Scott (Year 13), William Long, Logan Gardner, Jake Burrowes, Benjamin Ashman, Jack Pitts, Charles Butterfield, Coby Goode and William Tavendale (cox) (all Year 12), had a great race winning silver to a strong Hamilton Boys’ High School crew. Overall, we are competing in nine A finals and eight B finals, with six A finals and three B finals to look forward to tomorrow.

SUMMER TOURNAMENT WEEK LATEST RESULTS >

New Zealand Secondary School’s Volleyball Championships – The Senior A and Senior B Girls’ teams went to Palmerston North with high hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of each competition. Both teams surpassed their goal. The Senior B team went through with only one loss in pool play to win the Division 5 Championship. For such a young team this was a fantastic effort and sent off their coach Mikae Tuu’u in the best possible way. The Senior A Girls also had a wonderful tournament, playing some of their best volleyball of the season. They fought hard and in the semi-finals were beaten by a very good St Mary’s College team. Today the team lost to Christchurch Girls’ High School to finish fourth in New Zealand – a truly amazing effort by the team.

South Island Secondary School’s Touch Championships – The Senior Mixed touch team performed very well at the South Island Secondary Schools Touch Championships at Sheldon Park last weekend, becoming South Island champions. The team played a strong semi-final, beating South Otago High School, then enjoyed a narrow win in the final over the 2022 national champions, Rolleston College. In the final, the St Andrew’s team made a strong start and were a few points up, but Rolleston made a big come back and the score was 7–7 with less than a minute to go. St Andrew’s managed to score in the last few seconds of the game to win 8–7.

New Zealand Secondary School’s Tennis Championships – This week in Christchurch saw the top championship tennis teams meet to play the National Secondary Schools Championship. Entry requirements were to have at least three players with high singles rankings (S2–S5) which is not an easy thing to have. For the first time in 20 years of being involved with the competition, the Mixed team’s competition played Mixed Doubles after four Singles matches. Some very tough competition ensued during the week, with the closest being a countback on games against Ashburton College, with St Andrew’s winning 50 games to 48 after six matches. Over the four days of the competition, St Andrew’s finished fourth in New Zealand, a commendable effort against very strong competition.

New Zealand Secondary School’s Basketball Championships – Four teams travelled to Auckland to compete in the 3x3 championships – two Senior Boys’ teams, one Senior Girls’ team and one Junior Boys’ team. At the time of writing this report, all teams were having good success in their competition. Over the weekend the teams will be involved in the play-offs to determine their placings.

New Zealand Junior Secondary School’s Cricket Tournament – Our Year 10 cricket team travelled to Palmerston North to compete in the National Junior Secondary School’s tournament, which is made up of the top six teams in the country. Day 1 proved to be a bit of an eye-opener for the boys, with a loss to Napier Boys’ High School. Going into Day 2, the boys were desperate for an improved performance which they delivered, beating John McGlashan College by two wickets. On Wednesday they lost to Auckland Grammar School and once again turned things around yesterday beating Wellington College convincingly. Today they are playing Tauranga Boys’ High School and, at the time of writing this report, are well-placed to win.

South Island Secondary School’s MTB Championships – The mountain biking championships are being held at Coronet Peak in Queenstown, with three different categories – Cross Country, Downhill (which is not for the faint-hearted) and Enduro, a cross between cross country and downhill). When writing this report, both Cooper Pringle (Year 9) and William Pringle (Year 10) won gold in the Cross Country event, with William crowned the South Island U16 Champion and Cooper winning the U15 event. A great start to the championships which end on Sunday.

South Island Secondary School’s Water Polo Championships – This year, we have our Senior A Boys’ team and Senior Girls’ team competing in the championships, which continue throughout the coming weekend. At the time of writing this report, the teams have only played a couple of games each, with the boys having some success and the girls having a couple of big defeats. To put the girls’ defeats into context, they were entered in the B Grade but are playing in the A Grade so all their matches will be very tough.

New Zealand Junior Secondary School’s Futsal Championships – At the start of the week the Senior A Girls’ futsal team travelled to Wellington to compete in the Senior Girls’ futsal championships. After losing their first two matches, the girls came back strong over days 2 and 3 and beat Rangi Ruru Girls’ School convincingly to place 17th in New Zealand. The Senior Boys’ team joined the girls on Wednesday and started their championship. The boys’ team has had mixed results and, at the time of writing, still has one game to play.

South Island Secondary School’s Athletics Championships – At the time of writing this report, our nine athletes who qualified for the championships are on their way to Invercargill where they will be competing over the weekend.

CULTURAL SHOWCASE

On Wednesday evening, the Cultural Council hosted their first Cultural Showcase for this year. The event, hosted by Cultural Captains Mia Walker and Marco Leighs (both Year 13), was a huge success, featuring dance, the Māori and Pasifika group, the senior choir Staccoro, films made by senior students, a jazz combo, a classical trio, and of course, a few theatre sports games. The Council also used the opportunity to showcase art made by senior students. The event was a fundraiser for the Christchurch-based charity, Full Bellies, with $140.00 being raised.

COMMUNITY SERVICE FUNDRAISER

On Thursday the Secondary School participated in a non-uniform theme day run by the Community Service Leaders as a way to conclude the One Human Race month long challenge and raise funds towards the work of ‘So They Can’ in Kenya. Over lunchtime there was a basketball shooting competition, with the goal of seeing which House shot 85 baskets first. The number 85 represents the percentage of girls who have to endure genital cutting and arranged marriage. Thompson won this competition followed by McGibbon, Irwin and then Rutherford.

Thank you so our community service team and all those who contributed donations. $2402 was raised on the day with more still coming in online.

BRAVE FOUNDATION

On Monday, all Year 11–13 students attended a presentation delivered by Jessica Tyson, the founder of Brave, a New Zealand charity focused on raising awareness about sexual harm and consent. Jessica shared an emotive personal story and then discussed important topics such as consent, pornography and staying safe online. Students were engaged, respectful and responsive throughout the presentation. Teaching consent effectively is a vital component of our Health Curriculum so the College values the opportunity for students to receive multiple and clear messages. DEBATING

Twelve debaters took part in the Canterbury Regionals Debating Competition at the University of Canterbury last weekend. The StAC White team of Emily Keith, Luke Wylie (both Year 13), and James Hart (Year 12) took home the victory against Cashmere Gold. The final motion was 'This House would ban the use of AI weapons in war'. StAC White supported the motion and had a decisive win against Cashmere. This is the third year running that St Andrew’s has won this competition, and the second year running for Millie and Luke. The rest of the St Andrew’s teams, StAC Red, StAC Blue, and Baby Blue, all achieved two wins.

James Hart was also selected for the New Zealand Development team, Luke Wylie was selected for the Regional team, and Lachie Odlin was awarded Highly Commended.

CRICKET

The 1st XI had to work hard to secure an outright win over Christ’s College 2nd XI. St Andrew’s left College 207 to get after William Carrodus (Year 12) made 41 in the second innings. A great spell from Jonty Davidson (Year 12) 3/15 put the pressure on the College batsman as they got through to 181.

Other highlights this week were Zachary Lang (Year 10) made 51 n.o. for the 3rd XI against Shirley Boys’ High School, and Oliver Orchard (Year 9) made an impressive 61 n.o. against St Bede’s College.

Cycling

CYCLING

Riley Crampton (Year 9) competed in the Canterbury Cycling Road Championships held in North Canterbury last weekend, winning the U15 15km individual time trial and setting a new Canterbury record time, taking 41 seconds off the previous record held by Lawrence Pithie since 2016.

The 32km road race was held the following day. Riley broke away on the second lap with one other rider, and he was too strong up the last hill heading to the finish line to take the win.
