Dear Parents and Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa.

A record crowd turned up to Grandparents’ Day today, with over 600 guests gathered in the Centennial Chapel. Grandparents were delighted by the concert from our rangatahi and were then escorted on a tour of the College. Thank you to the Principal of Preparatory School, Jonathan Bierwirth and his helpers for the organisation of this popular event and to the students who were proud to show off their school.

Grandparents' Day Flickr >

The recent holidays were a welcome break for everyone although there were a number of activities involving students and staff in sport, production rehearsals, and professional development.

The success of our Girls’ Senior A basketball and netball teams at a national level was exceptional. The second place for basketball for a second consecutive year was a phenomenal achievement. StAC netball has also enjoyed a wonderful season in both the Preparatory and Secondary Schools, with a record number of teams catering for a wide range of ages and ability. To represent your school at a national level is a feat in itself, so the placing of our Senior A netball at 13th in New Zealand was another great success. Congratulations and thank you to all those involved. Congratulations also to our trap shooting team who competed at Nationals with the Girls’ team finishing second in the North Island championships and Maggie Hood (Year 13) winning the National Skeet.

On the music front, our rock band The E.C.H.O. won their way to compete at the Battle of the Bands finals in Wellington last weekend. This is an adult competition and students Hayden Lam (Year 12), Ethan Lam (Year 10) and Oliver Woodgate (Year 12) can be very proud of making the final round of this strongly contested and popular event.

On Monday our Robert Burns Scholars returned from their three-week trip to Scotland. Unsurprisingly Megan Simpson and Jack Flanagan (both Year 12) had a fantastic time and enjoyed the warm and generous hospitality of their Scottish hosts. Meg and Jack were also wonderful ambassadors for our school and country.

Last night I had the pleasure, along with a number of other staff, in supporting the book launch of Kerrin Davidson’s recent collection of poems, Hoof. Kerrin has been an inspiration to hundreds of students at St Andrew’s in their creative writing endeavours and it was a privilege to host her book launch, where a number of our students from Years 3–13 read their own published poems.

This weekend our jazz bands showcase in the Christchurch Big Band Festival. This is a wonderful way for the public to enjoy the talents of our jazz musicians, hopefully in the Labour Weekend sunshine. St Andrew’s will be performing on Saturday, 21 October, at 11.00am, Victoria Square.

Very best wishes to all involved with the Middle School production of Little Mermaid next week. Thank you to the parent helpers supporting our amazing production team of Performing Arts teachers, senior students and Old Collegians. Sixty-two current students are involved in this production, which is an ambitious and delightful show.

Good luck also to our 1st XI cricket team who play tomorrow against Christ’s College in the Canterbury semi-final of the Gillette Cup. The team has played well to make it to this stage in their quest to win the chance to play against the best teams in New Zealand in December.

With best wishes to all for the long weekend.

Senior Girls Basketball

BASKETBALL

The St Andrew's College Senior A Girls' basketball team earned the distinction of being the second-best team in the country in the 2023 New Zealand Secondary Schools Basketball Nationals held in Palmerston North over the term break. Earning their place in the AA Girls’ Grand Final, their formidable opponents in the championship match were the reigning AA Championship winners from the previous year, Westlake Girls’ High School. Despite the final score favouring Westlake Girls’ High School, 67–53, the St Andrew's College team played an outstanding tournament.

NETBALL

The Senior A netball team participated in the New Zealand Secondary School Netball Tournament at The Trusts Arena, Auckland, from Tuesday 3 – Friday 6 October. The tournament got off to a rough start due to extreme weather conditions that not only made our flight to Auckland very turbulent, but two of our players could not fly out of Queenstown to Auckland. To add to this, one of our players had COVID-19 and couldn’t join the team until Wednesday. Unfortunately, we only had seven players to start the tournament and luckily Makenzie Disher (Year 9) was able to join the team, to make a team of eight.

The team had a tough first few days but showed perseverance and resilience to play the best they could. Ella Sharpe (Year 12), who had played in the attack all season, willingly played defence and did a fantastic job. When the usual team were back together on Thursday, they beat Villa Maria College 40–30 and fought valiantly against Napier Girls’ High School to lose a close-fought battle 31–35. The team then beat New Plymouth Girls’ High School 33–26, after their initial 26–41 loss to them.

The team thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to play in this tournament and to play the top teams in the country. The St Andrew’s team certainly did themselves and the College proud, playing with a lot of heart and team unity to place 13th in New Zealand.

TRAP SHOOTING

It was a very wet three days that the team spent in Hamilton at the start of the school holiday at the North Island and National Secondary Schools Clay Target Championships. The North Island Championships were held on Day 1 with the St Andrew’s female team of Maggie Hood (Year 13), Lucie Hood (Year 11) and Addison Williams (Year 12) finishing second in the Ladies’ team championships.

On Day 2, in the National Championships, Kurt Lilly (Year 10) achieved the highest possible score in Single Rise but following a shoot-off missed out on a medal. Mitchell Twentyman’s (Year 11) high scores gained him a spot in the North Canterbury regional team alongside shooters from Lincoln High School and Christ’s College, and they finished second in the Regional Teams Match.

Ten of our 16 shooters took part in the North Island and National Skeet Championship on Day 3. Maggie Hood maintained her impressive form to become the North Island Female Skeet Champion.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

The New Zealand Secondary School Mountain Biking Championships were held during the holidays in Blenheim. St Andrew’s had just over 10 students competing in the three events – downhill, enduro and cross-country. The competition was very competitive, and our riders did their best across all the events they entered. For some, it was a very long four days of competition.

CRICKET

During the term break, the 1st XI cricket team travelled to Sydney to help with their preparation for the ‘business end’ of their season. The trip consisted of playing six matches over seven days – a hard schedule but one that pushed and tested the boys. The team played five GPS schools and an I-Zingarei team that is made up of various cricketers from around Sydney. St Andrew’s won their first two matches against Barker College and Newington College and drew their third match against Knox Grammar School. After three matches in a row, the boys needed the rest day, which many of them used to attend the Rugby League Grand Final with their parents. The last three days of the tour saw the 1st XI play and lose to I-Zingarei, lose to SHORE – Sydney Church of England Grammar School, and when rain stopped play against King’s School, the match was evenly poised. Overall, the tour was very successful and prepared the boys for their first competition match which was also a quarter-final Gillette Cup match against Timaru Boys’ High School.

ROWING

The St Andrew’s rowing team have had a great start to the rowing season over the school holidays with the novice team starting off the break with a two-day rowing camp. The goal was to teach the team how to get to and from rowing safely, the basics around getting off and on the water, and introduce some basic technical skills.

Our senior team kicked their season off last Sunday with a five-day camp in Twizel. A highlight was the Head Coach of the 1st XV, Ian Robinson, joining camp to work with the students and coaches around the College’s new Sports Framework. These sessions were very productive and enabled the creation of standards and action plans for the rowers and the coaches. While the returning rowers were in Twizel, the novice team had their second camp in Christchurch. It was a great way to kick off another exciting season for St Andrew’s rowing.

INTL TRIP IMG 20230928 WA0023

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT TRIP

During the Term 3 holidays, our international students had the opportunity to visit one of the tourist hot spots of the South Island – Queenstown. It was an interesting start to the trip with a State of Emergency declared the day before arriving. Once the students arrived in Queenstown, you would have never known there was a flash flood through the streets, with little to no debris remaining and the streets flooded with tourists. With a few changes to the original itinerary, the students enjoyed the Gondola, Luge, Fear Factory, a day skiing up at the Remarkables, Jetboating, Bungy Jumping, Walter Peak Farm Tour and much more.

WRITER-IN-RESIDENCE KERRIN P. SHARPE’S BOOK LAUNCH

On Thursday evening, St Andrew’s College hosted the launch of Writer-in-Residence, Kerrin P. Sharpe’s, new poetry collection, Hoof. After being welcomed to the Rentoul Senior College by the Teacher in Charge of Writing for Publication, Rebecca Ball, the well-attended crowd were treated to readings from Kerrin’s poetry students – Georgia Blyde (Year 3), Alfred Lash (Year 5), Hanxi (Cicy) Chen, Heidi Smith (both Year 9), Chantelle Xiong, Lucas Te Rangi (both Year 12) and William Russell (Year 13).

Rector, Christine Leighton, then spoke about Hoof and officially launched the book, before Kerrin read a specially selected range of poems from the collection. The crowd were thrilled to hear some of the history and local connections in Kerrin’s poems, several of which featured staff members and other guests present on the night. Kerrin was then joined by Christine and Assistant Head of Secondary School (Academic), Helaina Coote, to cut the cake, which was beautifully decorated with the front cover of Hoof. Guests were treated to elegant kai created by Catering Manager, Russell Gray, and music by Sea-am Thompson (Year 12) and Music teacher Michael Lawrence.

STAFF VS STUDENTS’ NETBALL GAME

Following the heated basketball battle in Term 2 between Preparatory School staff and Year 8 students, the netball girls decided to take on the competitive staff. The game was played in great spirit, and fair play was evident on the court. Both teams played well but the staff just managed a 16–15 win.

MATHEMATICS

The CMA Year 12 Mathematics Competition was held at Burnside High School on Tuesday and St Andrew’s had two teams defending the trophy won by the 2022 Year 12 team. The StAC B team of Jack Li, James McIver, and Flynn Blackler made it through to the final via the repechage, finishing in the top 6. The StAC A team of Bryan Cooper, James Hart, Aaron Moore and Chantelle Xiong won their heat and went on to win the final a few minutes ahead of the next team.

PIPE BAND

Georgia Eagle (Year 13) is competing in Juvenile Section 5 at the World Solo Drumming Championships in Glasgow, Scotland this weekend. A huge trip for her and we all wish her well for her performance.

Fifteen of our St Andrew’s College pipers travelled to Nelson during the term break to compete in the New Zealand Young Piper of the Year 2023, with our pipers winning several podium placings. Now in its fifth year, the Young Piper event falls perfectly in the solo piping calendar just before the Silver Chanter solo piping championship this weekend.

CRICKET

The Boys’ 1st XI hosted Timaru Boys’ High School on Saturday in a Gillette Cup quarter-final. Timaru Boys won the toss and elected to bat. The windy conditions made it hard work for the bowlers, especially into the wind, but St Andrew’s stuck to task with Will Ullrich Y13, Connor Higgs and Fletcher Mason (all Year 13) bowling well to restrict Timaru Boys to 206. A great start by St Andrew’s opening pair of Jack O’Rourke (Year 11) and James Anderson (Year 13) set the platform, but unfortunately, the team lost wickets in clumps and put themselves under pressure. Timothy Richardson and Jonty Davidson (both Year 12) combined to bring the team home in a mature partnership with three balls to spare. The team will play Christ’s College away tomorrow in the Gillette Cup semi-final.

CRICKET

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Girls’ 1st XI competed in the Gillette Venus Cricket Competition against other Canterbury teams. The first day of play saw the team compete against Craighead Diocesan School, St Margaret’s College 1st XI, and Cashmere High School in a T-15 format. After two early losses, the team came together with the bat and ball and won their final game against Cashmere High. The batting performance was dominated by a 52-run partnership of Daisy Thake (Year 10) and Gabrielle Jones (Year 12) to reach a solid total of 94 runs. The team then performed amazingly in the field, bowling Cashmere High out for 74. Gabrielle Jones took three catches, with Mookmanee Lee and Yinan (Vivian) Lu (both Year 11) bowling some tight overs which put Cashmere under pressure.

On Day 2, the team played two games against St Margaret’s College 2nd XI and then Rangiora High School. The girls’ skills developed over the tournament and after a close loss to St Margaret’s the team had their second win of the competition in the final game, restricting Rangiora High to 60 runs, chasing 89. A significant highlight of this game was Daisy Thake’s five-wicket bag, taking four wickets for two runs, in addition to an earlier stumping while she was keeping. Mookmanee Lee again bowled some tight overs, putting Rangiora High under all sorts of pressure, while Henrietta Nation, Holly Maraki, Addison Williams (all Year 12), Lucie Hood (Year 11), Daisy Thake and Hannah Radford (Year 9) and all contributed with the bat.

70 YEARS ON REUNIONS AND GENTLEMEN’S LUNCH

This year’s Gentlemen's Luncheon on Friday, October 13, was once again, a delightful and memorable event for our 114 Old Boys, spanning ages 73– 96. MIDDLE SCHOOL | RETURN OF BOOKS/LOCKER CLEARANCE

Year 11 (Weeks 1–2): All Year 11 students are required to complete a Clearance Form before they leave for the year. This will be done over Weeks 1–2 of Term 4 during tutor time. Their tutor group will visit The Green Library and Innovation Centre to return overdue books and/or any computer equipment which may have been borrowed. Students are also expected to totally clean out their lockers if they had one this year. They will be getting new lockers next year, in Senior College, so it is imperative they leave nothing behind, including their locks.

Year 9–10 (Weeks 6–7): All Year 9– 10 students are required to complete a Clearance Form before they leave for the year. This will be done over Weeks 6–7 of Term 4 during tutor time. Their tutor group will visit The Green Library and Innovation Centre to return overdue books and/or any computer equipment which may have been borrowed. Students are also expected to totally clean out their lockers. No one gets the same locker next year, so it is imperative they leave nothing behind, including their locks. It is optional for next year’s Year 10–11 students to have a locker, and notification has already gone out to students to apply for one. If there are any issues they can contact Middle School Office Administrator, Robyn McIntosh, at RMT@stac.school.nz.
