LogoutDear Parents and Caregivers
Kia ora koutou.
What a day it has been! I am very humbled by the honour bestowed upon me with the Farewell Assembly and tribute from the Secondary School. The day began with our final full Secondary School assembly, where a number of significant achievements and events were recognised. A highlight was the second place of our Girls’ Senior A basketball team at the Secondary Schools’ Nationals, along with Mitchell Twentyman’s (Year 12) success in the National trap shooting as the Single Rise Champion.
The 2024 Robert Burns Scholars, Olivia Bloom and Jake Elvidge (both Year 12) shared an enthusiastic reflection on their three weeks in Scotland over the term break, and the recipients of the Outward Bound Scholarship (Coco Schwass (Year 12)) and Spirit of New Zealand Scholarship (Max Bell (Year 11)) were recognised.
Five more Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Awards were also presented (see details below). I am always delighted when students manage to complete this award before the end of Year 13, which is a very big commitment.
The final presentation was to a Year 13 student who over the term break travelled to England to audition as an Organ Scholar to either Oxford or Cambridge Universities. Sea-am Thompson (Year 13) has achieved a long-held dream to attend the prestigious Magdalen College at Oxford as an Organ Scholar starting in October 2025. In recognition of this, I was delighted to present Sea-am with a ‘Rector’s Medal’ – the applause from the assembly clearly showed how much the students have valued Sea-am’s contribution to music at St Andrew’s.
The second part of the assembly was put together by the students as my farewell from them, assisted and I suspect organised by Head of Secondary School, Evert van Florenstein!
The totally unexpected surprise was to find around twenty Old Collegians on stage, students who had been prefects or head students in my 17 years. It was most touching when some of them spoke of their time here or sang, we even enjoyed a combined choir performance with present students and Old Collegians! A special thank you to Old Collegian Estee Wilke (OC 2022) for her solo and also her duet with Jack Flanagan (Year 13.) Thank you to Heads of College, Hugo, Meg, Carter and Holly, and Board Deputy Chair Nick Letham for their part in the assembly. A fitting finale was the recessional led by the Pipe Band playing, Christine Leighton’s Farewell.
As the sun beat down, the celebrations concluded with a whole Secondary School haka on the front lawn of Strowan. The kapa haka performance, and the College haka led by George Wesley (Year 12), was a moment I will never forget, as was the entire morning.

Grandparents' Day
Thank you to Principal of Preparatory School, Jonathan Bierwirth and the Preparatory School staff team who organised the annual Grandparents’ Day today. The events of the morning meant I completely missed my usual spot as ‘MC’ for the chapel concert, but Jonathan stepped in, and I got there just in time to say a few words and share my grandparent “jokes”. I know this day is very special for families, and equally enjoyed by grandparents and our students.

Year 12 Leavers Function
On Thursday evening, I was delighted to host, along with Evert van Florenstein, Head of Senior College John Ruge, and Year 12 Dean Dayna Stirling, a group of Year 12 leavers and their parents in Strowan House for a small celebration of their time at St Andrew’s. It was great to hear about the plans of these leavers and their appreciation for the time at StAC.

That’s enough for the first week. A long weekend is now welcome!
Best wishes to all.

Friendships are a cornerstone of adolescent development, and well-being. In this blog post, Head of Well-being Kerry Larby explores why friendships are vital for young people and offers insights for parents and educators on how to support rangatahi in building and maintaining healthy, supportive relationships that foster connection and growth during these pivotal years.
READ BLOG POST >In the last week of the holidays, a group of ten Year 10 students, Luke Cleugh, Carter Evans, Chloe Evans, Harry Frew, Zoe Robinson, Charlie Russell, Piper Stone, Allegra Voice, Katrina Wallis, and Sam Wilton, plus Head of Commerce Phil Temple, flew to Auckland to embark on a five-day Spirit of Adventure voyage around the beautiful Hauraki Gulf. They sailed on the Spirit of New Zealand, a 45m long, three masted “pirate ship” with 30 students from Dunstan High School in Alexandra, Rotorua Lakes High School, and Havelock North High School. The voyage was a fantastic experience with the students enthusiastically taking on the many challenges designed to push themselves outside their comfort zone. The daily routine started with a plunge off the ship into the ocean at 6.30am, and included cleaning the ship, helping prepare meals, getting sails up and down, paddling rafts to and from shore, and other fun activities. Highlights included spotting dolphins, taking a turn at night watch, climbing to the top of the rigging, beach games, a rope swing off the ship into the ocean, campfire and dinner on a remote beach, a beautiful, if tiring, bush walk to a grove of magnificent kauri trees, helping the cook prepare fantastic meals, and the Spirit Olympics. When asked about their biggest highlights, the students reflected with pride on the way they had overcome the many challenges but, above all, the friendships they developed within the group and with the students from other schools was what they treasured most, and plan to continue to cultivate in the future.
FLICKR >The Hillary Challenge Final was held in the Tongariro National Park at the Hillary Outdoor Centre in the first weekend of October. The Senior Adventure Racing Team, The Prickly Thistles, competed in the toughest five-day Adventure Race in New Zealand, with the top 12 schools in the country. The team was Elliot Graves (Captain) (Year 13), Adam MacFarlane, Katherine Simcock, Isabella Cody (all Year 12), Joshua Morrow, Toby Wilson, Abigail Scott-Douglas and Iona Garrett (all Year 11). The team represented the school exceptionally well amidst challenging torrential rain, thunder, mud, sleet, and snow. The five days of events included two days of cryptic challenges, an overnight expedition with orienteering, and finally a 55km multisport race. The team placed fourth in the overall spirit points and 12th in New Zealand out of over 30 teams at the trials.
At the start of the holidays the South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) Clay Target Championships and the New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) Clay Target Championships took place in Christchurch at the Canterbury Clay Target Club, with over 300 shooters competing in both events. At the end of the three days of shooting, the St Andrew’s team achieved a number of great results including one National Champion; Mitchell Twentyman (Year 12) won the single rise competition in a shootout and on his way to winning he shot 137 targets without missing – a fantastic result in windy conditions.
The Senior Boys’ and Girls’ basketball teams both competed at the 'AA' Secondary Schools National Championships during the first week of the holidays. The boys’ team finished 19th out of 24 teams nationally with a 3–5 record, whilst our girls forged their way into their third straight national final. Facing Westlake Girls’ High School, St Andrew’s could not get the final win, falling 97–69 to finish with a silver medal.
Ava Jones (Year 11) was named in the Girls’ All-Star 5 for her superb play throughout the tournament.
During the second week of the holiday break, the Senior A netball team competed in the National competition in Christchurch. Their first game was against Howick College, who ultimately won the entire competition. The team bounced back with a win in their next game, setting up a crucial match against Westlake Girls’ High School. The match ended in a draw, and so on points differential, they advanced while St Andrew’s moved to the bottom eight. In the following three games, the team won two and narrowly lost one. In their final game, a playoff for 11th or 12th places, they played New Plymouth Girls’ High School, which ended in a close 34–31 loss, placing St Andrew’s 12th in the country. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and a wonderful opportunity to compete against a variety of teams. The final game marked a significant moment for six team members, as it was their last match representing the College. We extend our thanks to each of them for their hard work, leadership, and sportsmanship. As they move on to new adventures, we wish them all the best. Their legacy will be a cherished part of our team’s history.
Five Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Silver and Gold Adventurous Journeys took place in the first week of the holidays involving 35 students and the Castle Hill instructors. The locations included Mount Somers (two groups), Mount Oxford, Lake Sumner and the Goats Pass. All groups successfully completed their journeys despite the mix of weather conditions.
FLICKR >During the second week of the holidays, the New Zealand Secondary School Mountain Biking Championships were held at the Christchurch Adventure Park, with 13 students taking part over three disciplines – Cross Country, Enduro and Downhill. While the team did not achieve any podium finishes, they all gave it their best. Edward Bull (Year 11) was our most successful rider, gaining one top 10 and one top 20 finish.
The 1st XI cricket team embarked on a tour to Sydney during the holidays, playing six games against some of the top schools in Sydney, winning three out of the six games. A squad of 14 players went on tour and every player got opportunities to showcase their skills. It's a great tour leading into the Term 4 one-day season.
Rowing is now in full swing following three rowing camps held over the holiday break. 40 rowers in the novice age group enjoyed two weekend camps and the amazing weather led to some awesome development for our rowers in the learn to row programme. Our senior squad ventured to Twizel for camp, which has set an early high standard for the season. The team is rearing to go and ready to train hard in Term 4, giving us an excellent base to begin the 2024/25 rowing season.
FLICKR >The 65 students involved in the upcoming Middle School production, Once Upon a Mattress, worked hard in the last week of the holidays and after school to get everything ready for the production, which opens next Wednesday, 30 October. This is delightful show, featuring talented students working with incredible design elements. We hope you get your tickets quickly as the closing night is already sold out.
PURCHASE TICKETS HERE >This is the fifth year we have run the Technology Exhibition Gallery 347, and it was wonderful to see so many parents support their children in their creative endeavours. Gallery 347 is an opportunity for the Year 12– 13 DVC students to exhibit a mix of Product and Spatial Design work and this year we also included the Year 11 DVC cohort. The Year 11 students exhibited their Castle Hill Holiday Home which needed to be based on the work of an Influential Designer, or a Blue Tooth Speaker concept marketed to a certain target audience. The Year 12 cohort exhibited a Designer Chair or their Spatial Folio, which was based on a Container House. The Year 13 students had an open brief, which produced a wide range of Product and Spatial Design Outcomes. Some highlights included Brooke Hughes (Year 13) Community Hub inspired by a shell, William Couper’s (Year 13) Salt Water Powered Car in the Product Section, some exceptional modelling was shown within Samantha Hooker’s (Year 13) Rakaia Gorge Bridge based on the forms of a salmon, and the elegant curves within Felix Parkinson’s (Year 13) Tera, a sailing club for a site in Navel Point. Thank you to Head of Technology, Allyson Duncan, and the Year 10 Food Technology students who produced the wonderful food, to the library staff for letting us take over the library, and the IT team for their amazing support.
FLICKR >On Tuesday evening, musical students in Years 5–8 performed in the Christchurch Schools' Music Festival at the Christchurch Town Hall. The audience were treated to a wonderful night of music, including the massed choir, Junior and Senior representative choirs, and the Symphony Orchestra – all featuring many St Andrew’s students, who have worked hard and showed true commitment by attending practices and holiday programmes. The students were all wonderful ambassadors for our College.
At the end of Term 3, the Prefect Team ran a 'Jungle' themed disco for Year 2–3 students. This was a very successful evening, including dancing and creative costumes. Thank you to the prefects for running this special event.
FLICKR >Hannah Burnett, Jack Flanagan, Madison Hughes, Hunter Lewis and Harrison Justice (all Year 13) have been awarded their Gold Award approved and recognised in assembly today.

The group completed a 10km walk to the summit of the Port Hills, along the crater rim pathway, and back through Victoria Park. The Gentlemen’s Lunch at St Andrew’s College on Friday 18 October, was a truly memorable event, attended by 121 Old Boys. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie and nostalgia as former classmates, ranging in age from 74 to 97, reconnected and shared stories from their school days, spanning from 1941 to 1968. We also welcomed the Classes of 1949, 1954 and 1959 celebrating their 65, 70 and 75 Year On reunions.
The day began with morning tea in the Centennial Chapel foyer, followed by performances by talented students Edward Pitts, Chantelle Xiong (both Year 13), and Miu Kim (Year 12), accompanied by William Ernest (OC 2014). The guests were then piped over the Turley Bridge by Jack Boon (Year 13) for the obligatory photos.
Catering Manager, Russell Gray, and his team provided another outstanding lunch. Ian Satterthwaite (OC 1958) said Grace, Miles Kennedy (OC 1945) offered a Toast to Absent Friends, and Neil Thompson (OC 1957) delivered a Toast to the College, paying tribute to Rector Christine Leighton for her outstanding tenure and contributions to the Old Collegians community. Good luck to all students who are representing the College over the long weekend in sports and cultural activities, including:
St Andrew’s College has been working closely with Lime and Neuron scooter companies to ensure the safety of our students and staff. In recent times we have witnessed many unsafe acts and near misses involving our students, and members of public riding e-scooters and bikes in or around our school. Effective immediately, Lime and Neuron equipment can no longer enter the St Andrew’s College campus. A geo-fence has been set-up to prevent these scooters and bikes from physically entering our school, and a speed reduction has been introduced during school hours on both Papanui and Normans Road. If anyone attempts to ride into St Andrew’s College, the equipment has been set up to slow down and de-activate. Both Lime and Neuron have updated their applications, which now clearly shows St Andrew’s College as a “no go zone”.
We are now in examination season for most students. Year 9 and 10 students will sit their Junior examinations in most of their core subjects only, on Monday 4 November (morning and afternoon) and Tuesday 5 November, morning only. Students are receiving the timetable information from their tutors this week and week and need to note down the relevant details. We are hoping to have all students sit their examinations as scheduled but have reserved Wednesday 6 November as a ‘catch-up’ day should it be needed for absences. Teachers are currently outlining to students what they will be examined on and what they should do to prepare for them. All Year 9 and 10 students will sit their English examination online on exam.net, which will provide them with the opportunity to practise with this form of assessment that is happening increasingly in NCEA. Results will be available soon after each examination.
NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship examinations begin for students on Tuesday 5 November and will run through until the end of November. Students have received all the details that they need from NZQA, including the very important Candidate Admission slip that they will need to bring to each examination. As quite a number of these examinations are online, now is the time for students to check that their laptop is in good, sound, working condition and will last for the full length of the three-hour examinations. Students sitting online examinations need to have the details of their NZQA Learner Login username and password firmly in their heads, as those are essential for logging into their examinations. Results are available in mid-January 2025 and are accessed by students through their Learner Login. Marked papers will be available a week or two after results are released via the login.
Academic Reporting
Year 9 and 10 students will receive full academic reports for all of their subjects at the end of the school year, around Thursday 5 December. Year 11 and 12 students receive a Tutor Profile comment at the same time as Junior reports. The Academic Conferences at the end of Term 3 for Years 11–13 take the place of written academic reports.
