New Zealand Scholarship

Karahipi Aotearoa

The assessment for New Zealand Scholarship is Standards-based and all assessments are external. A Scholarship subject enables students to be assessed against challenging Standards and is demanding even for the most able students in each subject.

A student who achieves a Scholarship will have demonstrated, within complex situations, higher level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and the ability to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas.

Scholarship is studied primarily by Year 13 students who are also studying NCEA Level 3 subjects, however, some students in Year 12, or even Year 11, may be advised to consider studying (a) Scholarship subject(s).

Depending on the area of study, a student will display a range of:

  • comprehensive content knowledge (breadth and depth);
  • effective communication;
  • original or sophisticated solutions, performances, or approaches;
  • critical evaluation;
  • flexible thinking in unfamiliar/unexpected contexts.

If you have gained many Standards with Excellence throughout your school studies and are doing Level 3 Standards, you may wish to enter for New Zealand Scholarship.

Scholarship assessments cover the same content as Level 3 Achievement Standards, so a separate course is not needed.

The College creates a formal timetable of Scholarship tutorials that are provided for many Year 13 subjects (one tutorial per week). The College Prelim examinations timetable (September) includes practice examinations for all Scholarship subjects that have examinations.

There is no fee for entering Scholarship for domestic students. For international students, the fee is $102.20 per subject.
