Preparatory School Newsletter

Thursday 1 June 2023

It is good to be at the end of Week 5. Term 2 is traditionally difficult as we head into winter. As you know, there is considerable sickness in the community. I hope you and your family are coping with these challenges.

Wishing everyone the very best for the King's Birthday long weekend.

Regards

Canterbury Independent Zones Cross Country 2023

On Monday 29 May, 44 Preparatory School students competed at the Independent Zones Cross Country. It was an extremely satisfying day for the cross country team.

Several students placed in the Top 3 for their age group and have now qualified for the Canterbury Zones:

Isabelle Greer – Year 6 Girls – 3rd
Tayla Ford – Year 7 Girls – 3rd
Hayley Stowell – Year 8 Girls – 2nd
Theo Smith – Year 8 Boys – 2nd

Several students also qualified as the Top 6 runners in their age group and will now also represent our zone at the Canterbury Primary Cross Country in June. These students are Willim Fowler, Oliver Julius, Eva Crawford, Riley Pringle, Sabine Waghorn, Isla Marshall and Kobe Ford.

We had an extremely strong representation in the Year 7 Girls race, with five of our runners placing within the Top 8 of their age group and the Year 8 Boys race with three of our runners placing in the Top 6.

All students represented the school with awe inspiring determination, and ability to push themselves to new levels within their races. They really did St Andrew’s Preparatory School College proud, and I am extremely impressed with their determination to give their best and really go the extra mile that you only learn from pushing yourself individually.

Well done to all the students who represented the college at the ISSA Zones, you are excellent role models for the school. This experience will form an excellent foundation for future events.

Ballet

Last week the Ballet Academy enjoyed three full days of classes with Specialist Dance Educator, Neve Pierce, from the Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB). Dancers from Years 3–8 experienced new repertoire from the current RNZB production of Romeo and Juliet such as the ballroom scene and the sword fight!

The Secondary School dancers learnt new ‘concerto’ style performance pieces, for presentation later in the year. This annual event is a wonderful opportunity to learn from Ballet role models of excellence.

STACTALKS: TEENS AND TECH

During this technology-focused presentation, St Andrew’s College staff and members of the College wider community will discuss the topic of technology and adolescent well-being. They will present their ideas about the positive and negative impacts of technology use and will reflect on the approach St Andrew’s has adopted in response to research about technology, pornography, teaching and learning and social media.

The evening will conclude with a panel discussion where parents will have the opportunity to ask questions, provide feedback, and consider strategies they can adopt at home to promote positive technological use and prioritise well-being.
