Week 1, Term 4

The children have been uplifted and positive about being back at school this week, and have enjoyed the interactions with their classmates and teachers.

The warmer and lighter days have added to the feeling that Summer is on the way. In saying this, please ensure your child has sunscreen applied before leaving the house in the morning, and they have a wide-brimmed or bucket hat available at school every day.

It is a busy term ahead, please keep an eye on what’s scheduled. The beginning of term information from class teachers will have captured most of the planned events and activities.

National ShakeOut

This morning, the Preparatory School children and staff participated in the National ShakeOut earthquake drill. This is to remind the children about what to do in the event of an earthquake – Drop, Cover and Hold. The drill lasted 45 seconds. There was also some discussion in classes about tsunami – Long or Strong – Get Gone.

Grandparents’ Day | Friday 20 October

We are looking forward to Grandparents' Day tomorrow. The weather forecast continues to look hopeful – fingers crossed!

We have arranged a Christmas Goodies tasting stand outside the Centennial Chapel. This is the PTA's annual fundraiser, and after a nibbler (taste treat), there will be the option to order one of these beautiful cakes or other treats for Christmas. The stand will be operational for about an hour before the entertainment commences inside at 10.40am. Payment is required to be made at the time of ordering and EFTPOS will be available.

Following the conclusion of the entertainment in the Centennial Chapel (11.30am approximately), everyone will be piped outside and will meet up with the Preparatory School and Secondary School children eagerly waiting in anticipation. There will be a photographer available to capture this special day for those who would like a free group shot which will be taken over by the Senior College. Pre-school grandparents will walk to the Pre-school where the children and staff will be waiting.

Regards

Student Successes

Anna LEwis

Touch Rugby

Anna Lewis (Year 8) has been selected for the Canterbury U14 Girls' Touch Rugby Black team. She has also been selected to play in a New Zealand Barbarians Touch Rugby team for the Queensland All Nations Touch Tournament in December.

Ice Hockey

In early October, Archer Bryant (Year 4) competed in the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation U12 National Championships. After two days of round robin the Canterbury Spiders were placed third overall in New Zealand and went into the playoffs – the first time a South Island team has made the playoffs in a number of years. After an incredibly tough game they drew 2–2 and went into penalty time, where they unfortunately conceded a goal to finish the competition fourth out of 21 teams, and the top Canterbury team.

It is with great excitement that we can share the following Preparatory School teams that have qualified for the National Finals in the New Zealand Future Problem Solving Competition that will take place in Auckland next weekend.
