Term 2, Week 6

Future Problem Solving World Finals

The Future Problem Solving (FPS) model is a dynamic and creative thinking process, and includes the following steps:

  • Identify Challenges;
  • Select an Underlying Problem;
  • Produce Solution Ideas;
  • Generate and Select Criteria;
  • Apply Criteria;
  • Develop an Action Plan;
  • Present the Action Plan.

The Preparatory School has enjoyed FPS success both nationally and internationally over many years. Our teams qualified for the World event at last year’s National Finals. This year, the World Final was held at Indiana University Bloomington, USA, for a week from Sunday 2 June. Post tournament, the children and staff moved from a place of high intensity to having some fun. The group returns to Christchurch tomorrow.

Results:

  • 3rd place in the world for the Year 9 team (qualified as Year 8 students) for their Presentation of the Action Plan;
  • 9th (Top 10 in the world) for the Year 8 boys (qualified as Year 7 students) in the Global Issues section. This is a very good result for the boys considering a minor error with one challenge. The judges commented that this was "an exceptional team".

World Vision 40-Hour Famine

In two weeks’ time we will be supporting World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine (20 hours for Preparatory School children).

You will be able to support your child’s involvement and challenge by contributing financially – small amounts, gifted by many, will achieve a wonderful result! World Vision is a global Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice.

No need to sign up individually; to access the St Andrew’s College World Vision site please click here. Then click 'Give now' to donate.

Year 3 Wearable Arts

Last Friday, after more than a term of preparation, Year 3 students performed their World of Wearable Arts show to an audience of students, parents, and teachers. The theme was ‘Magical Mystery Garden’; the costumes included an eco-friendly wheelbarrow, princesses, dragons, a hedgehog, sausage dog, a bird, a unicorn, and even a child-sized flower! The Junior Department would like to thank Helen King for supporting the children in this highly creative and visually exciting project.

Future Problem Solving

A group of 11 Year 8–9 students travelled with Preparatory School Teacher and  Future Problem Solving coach, Sonia Lewis, along with teacher Kelly McBride,  to the International Future Problem Solving Competition held at Indiana University Bloomington. The Year 9 Future Problem Solving team won third place in the world in the ‘Presentation of Action Plan’ category. The students are: William Nicolls, Sophie Schouten, Genevieve Bainbridge-Smith, Alyssa Geddes, Alexa Collis (all Year 9), and Maja Clark (Year 8 2023 Leaver). The Preparatory School was also represented with a Boys’ and Girls’ team competing. Mathematics

Cong (Zilong) Chen (Year 8) has achieved High Distinction with a perfect score in the Australian Mathematics CAT Competition. The Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition gives students the opportunity to develop their problem-solving skills through algorithmic thinking. The competition incorporates unique ‘three-stage tasks’ that encourage students to develop informal algorithms and apply them to test data of increasing size or complexity.

Basketball

On Monday, the Preparatory School organised the ISSA Basketball Tournament for 2024. Due to the number of teams involved, the tournament took place at Bishopdale, with schools from the ISSA, Selwyn House, Medbury School, Cathedral Grammar School, St Michael’s Church School and St Mark’s School, fielding teams in four separate divisions, the Year 5–6 Boys, Year 5–6 Girls, Year 7–8 Girls and Year 7–8 Boys. All four St Andrew’s College teams went through the tournament undefeated despite some tough games against Selwyn House and St Mark’s School. There was some great basketball on display. All four teams now qualify to play in the Canterbury Primary Schools Basketball Tournament in Term 3. Thank you to all of the players, coaches, and supporters, with special thanks to Mr Dave Ermerins for his excellent organisation.

RC Ag Show
